Desperate dealers making customers pay miles more for extras

Desperate dealers are attracting buyers with lower list prices before making them pay for expensive optional extras that really should be standard, according to reports.
Some extras such as car mats are items that buyers might have expected to be standard while others, including sat-nav systems, are overpriced and will add nothing to a car’s resale value.
According to the report in the News of the World, the most noticeable difference was in the supermini category. If you use the award-winning Audi A1 1.2 TFSI SE as an example, the f13,420 list price seems reasonable. However adding tempting extras such pearl effect paint, 18-inch alloy wheels, leather trim and a sat-nav system can balloon the price by up to 110% to f28,165!
Extras on rivals such as the Citroen DS3 and MINI One can add 38% and 80% to the list prices respectively.
Which? Car Editor Richard Headland said optional extras were “an easy way for companies to boost profits, especially when they’re bundled into expensive ‘option packs’ which get buyers to pay for extras that they don’t even want.”
