When it comes to relaxing, there’s no place like the bath. You can lock the door and shut yourself off from the world for a few hours (or until your skin becomes wrinkly). The bathroom is the perfect place for gathering your thoughts without interruption from the rest of the world, making it the prime place to relax and unwind after a stressful or troublesome day.
If you’re having trouble finding ways to unwind in your own home here are five top tips that should have your stress-levels plummeting.
The most common way to de-stress is to spend time in the bath shortly before you plan to sleep. Other than a place to wash, many people choose baths as opposed to showers as showers are designed to be quick. Baths are used to relieve stress, back pain and gather thoughts.
Improve your bathing experience by investing in some luxury pampering products to make your bath time even more relaxing. Scented bath products are great for relaxing as the aroma is pleasant, inviting you to stay in the bath even longer! Invest in a bath with jets, the motion of the jets on your skin mimics a massage, which is a great unwinding technique.
Sometimes the heat of the bath can cause dehydration, leading to headaches and a feeling of nausea. Avoid using scalding hot water to fill your bath bath and have a drink at hand to rehydrate with.
When choosing a drink to have in the bath, make sure it’s caffeine free as drinking caffeine is a stimulant and will defeat the object of your bath! Caffeine can also enhance some illnesses which are caused by stress; such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome. If you desire a hot drink try a Horlicks or Herbal Tea as these are caffeine-free. For a chilled drink avoid fizzy pop as they contain caffeine. If the thought of water doesn’t excite your taste buds then try some pure juice or a glass of milk.
Prior to stepping in the bath, ensure your heated towel rail is switched on, with the towels you intend to use on it. Heating your towels up will prevent the harsh coldness towels can sometimes have, especially in the winter. So when you get out of the bath the towels will feel snug and comforting. For extra pampering hang your night gown and slippers on there too!
Scrub your troubles away and feel like a new you – by exfoliating! Exfoliating removes dead skin and will leave your skin feeling invigorated and fresh. If your feet are sore from walking it’s great to soak them for a while before removing any hard skin that’s causing pain by using a pumice stone.
Continue the relaxation once your bath has drained by moisturising. Rehydrating your skin prior to exfoliating is important to maintaining a healthy glow to your complexion. Moisturising your feet after using a pumice stone will help your feet feel fresh and reduce pain from burning feet.
Taking time out to unwind can really help prevent those lethargic feelings that everyday pressures can impose on you. Feeling stressed can be the cause of many minor illnesses and muscular pains. You are also more susceptible to common colds and flu viruses when feeling run down, due to your body tiring. This is why spending some quality time alone relaxing is the key to feeling energised and prepared for everyday life.
